Physical Education and Sport are vital to the development of all children and young people. It gives them the skills and abilities to become contributing members of society; it helps shape lifelong attitudes to health and fitness and is the starting point on the performance ladder for those with talent. In the competitive nature of today's society, academic ability alone may not be enough to give a young person the edge in the global market for employment. Today's employers are looking for candidates who are able to adapt easily to changing situations, who can solve problems through creative thinking, possess social skills and have the confidence and desire to achieve their personal targets. These characterstics are vital in sport, physical education and in everyday life. King Ethelbert School is committed to giving every opportunity to all members of its community the chance to develop themselves through physical activity. The school boasts a brand new sports hall facility that complements its outdoor playing fields and hard court area. The complex provides a substantial indoor facility with a dance studio, fitness suite and changing areas. At Key Stage 3 all pupils follow the National Curriculum and participate in traditional team games of football, rugby, netball and basketball in addition to gymnastics, health related fitness and problem solving. In the summer term the focus turns to athletics, cricket, rounders and tennis. At Key Stage 4 all pupils continue to follow core physical education. In addition to those activities developed in Key Stage 3, pupils are introduced to trampolining and badminton and have access to the cardiovascular and weight training facilities in the fitness suite. Pupils can also choose to study examination Physical Education through GCSE Sports Studies and/or BTEC Sport and Leisure. The school has developed links with many local clubs and facilities and looks to continue these and forge many more in the provision of physical education for its pupils. Part of this provision is an extensive out of hours learning programme throughout the week and the participation in many inter school competitions in a wide range of activities. |
