Course information:

  • BTEC Applied Science covers all three science specialisms

  • There are different streams available for students to follow:

  1. Applied Science (mixture of all sciences)

  2. Analytical & Forensic Science

  3. Physical Science (predominantly physics)

  4. Biomedical Science

  • Extended Diploma and Foundation Diploma pathways offered

  • Maximum UCAS points for Extended Diploma = 168 (D*D*D*)

Note: 3 x A* at A Level = 168 UCAS points

Course Structure:

In Y12 all of the students complete the same units, no matter which stream they have chosen. In Y13 the students complete more specific optional units based around their stream of choice. We are able to tailor this offer for our individual student aspirations.

Y12 Mandatory units:
  • UNIT 1: Principles and Applications of Science I (exam)
  • UNIT 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

  • UNIT 3: Scientific Investigation Skills (exam)

  • UNIT 4: Laboratory Techniques and their Application

  • UNIT 6: Investigative Project

+ 2 x Optional units

Y13 Mandatory units:
  • UNIT 5: Principles and Applications of Science II (exam)

  • UNIT 7: Contemporary Issues in Science (exam)

+ 4 x Optional units

Note: Optional units are voted for by students and are also governed by the scientific stream selected.
